WILL OF THOMAS LYNDLEY OF LYNDLEY ESQUIRE 1524 Will 1st October 1524 In the name of God Amen the first of April the year of our Lord God 1524, I Thomas Lyndley of Lyndley esquire hoole mynde and good rememberance beynge, maketh and ordene my last will and testament in this forme following, First I gif and bequeath my soull unto Almightie God and to our blessed lady Mary Virgine and to al the saints in hevyn and my body to be buriede in Otley church yerde and my best beast to be my mortuary. Also I gif and bequeath to the hye altare of Otley for tithes and ablations forgothe 6s 8d. Also to the holie roude of Otley 6s 8d. Also where I have enfeoffed by my dede berying date25th of October the thirde year of the reign of our Soverayne Lorde Kyng Henry 8th William Thwaite of Marston esquire, William Gascoingne of Dnffeld, Lawrence Kighley, Henry Gascoingne Mekifeld, John Burnard of Knaresburgh and Leonarde Lyndley chaplayne in and of certayne lands and tenements in Otley, Leathley, Casteley to have and to hold to them and to their heirs for and to the use and intent that they with the revenues isshues and proffitts coming and growing of the saide lands tenements in Otley, Leathley and Casteley aforesaide to the yearly value of 6 marcs by the yere shall fynde an honeste priest for ever more to syng at my maner of Lyndley to pray for my soull, my father and mothers soulless and al ------ soulless. Also I will that my saide feoffes shall suffer Sir William Grene nowe my chaplayne to receive and perceive the saide isshues and proffitts of the saide lands and tenements in Otley, Leathley and Casteley aforesaide to the yearly value of 6 marcs by yere during his life naturall so that he syng continually at my manor of Lyndley to pray for the soulless as aforesaide. And further I will that my sone Brian Palmes and Isabell his wife or suche other persone or persones as herafter shall happyn to be lorde of my saide maner of Lyndley at every avoidance of the saide priest or priests shall for ever more have the denouncion or presentmente of every suche priest as here after shall happyn to be admitted to syng at the saide maner and that they and every of them shall have receive and perceive the saide isshues and proffitts to the saide yerely value of 6 marcs by yere. Also I will that when it shall fortune my saide feoffes to die so that there be but 3 or 2 at the least of life and any other feoffes that herafter shallbe enfeoffed to those aforesaide that these 3 or 2 that so happen to survive there fellows shall by their dede indented enfeoffe other persone within the parish of Otley to the nober of 6 or 8 or more to those as afore is expressed. Also I will that George Bekwith and Ann his wife have all my lands that I have nowe in the holding of Thickelwray lieing in the hamlets of Rosseh and Bekwith in the township of Kythinghall to them and there heirs and assignes for ever. Item I bequeath to Elizabeth Palmes and Elizabeth Everyngham my daughters either of them £20 in peny and pennyworth so that neither there husbands nor they instromitte none further of any of my goods. I will that every one of my servants shall have one quarter wage over there duyte to them returned. Item I bequeath to Ann Withes 20s and my wiffes rewarde. Item I gif unto Richard Hamlyn my servant 2Kye and Thomas Goodall one whie. Also I will that Thomas Lyndley my nevue shall have to hym and his heirs al suche lands as I purchased in Skegby which is of the clere value by yere 33s 4d. Also I will that my feoffes of all my maners lands and tenements within the shires of Yorke and Lincoln shall stand and be feoffes in the same to the intent of the performance of this my last will and testament. And also to the performance of certayne indentures of covenants of marriage afore made betwixt Sir John Everyngham Knyghte and me and also betwixt Brian Palmes and me and where that I by my deds beryng date the 4th day of January the 13th yere of the Regne of our Soverynge Lorde Kyng Henry the 8th have enfeoffed William Stoteld knight, Thomas Midilton sone and heir apparent unto the saide Sir William, William Thwaite of Marston, William sone and heir of the saide William esquire and Robert Sutill gentleman of and in the mote and half maner of Farneley and al other lands and tenements rents reversions and premises in Farneley aforesaide to have to holde to them and their heirs of me for ever to the use of me and Maude my wife and to the heirs of me for ever. I will that my sade feoffes and in the said mote of the sade maner of Farneley and other my lands and tenements reversions and premises aforesade shall stand and be seased to the use of Maude my wife for term of her life and after her decease to stand and be seased to the use of Brian Palmes and Isabell his wife and the heirs of the sade Isabell for ever. Also I will that Brian Palmes and Isabell his wife shall have all my lands that I have nowe in the holding of Adamson wif lyeing in the township and parish of Otley to them and to the heirs of the sade Isabell for ever. Also I will that my feoffes of my maners lands and tenements of Hillburnyghim and knotingley shall stande and be seased to use of Elizabeth Everyngham my daughter and her heirs for ever. Also I will that such lands that I dide purchase of Thomas Daid in Farneley which James Daude sone of the sade Thomas dothe clame shalbe ordered upon my parte by Nicholas fawks. John Kighley, William Maude and James Garnet. The residue of al my goods above not bequeathed, my detts paide, I gif and bequeath to Maude my wife whome I make hole executrix of this my last will and testament. Also I will that my brother William Thwaite esquire and Lawrence Kighley esquire be coadvisors and supervisors of this my p[resent testament. Thes beryng witness – Sir William Midleton Knight, Robert Longton esquire, William Ardyngton (Arthrington), Percival Kighley gentleman and Sir William Grene chaplayne.
Probate granted 15th October 1524. Administration granted to his relic, here called Matilda, rather that Maude in the will.
