WILL OF PERCIVAL LINDLEY OF LINDLEY 1495 BIHR Prob.Reg. Vol.3, ff.388R-V In the name of God, Amen. The 13th day of the month of August AD 1495 and the 10th year of the reign of King Henry, VII after the conquest of England, I, Percival Lindeley, of Lindeley, Esq, being of sound mind and whole memory, do make my testament in this manner. First, I bequeath my soul to God Almighty and to the Blessed Virgin Mary his mother and to all the saints, and my body to be buried in the churchyard of my parish church of Oteley, at the east end of the choir. Again, I give and bequeath my best beast for my mortuary. Again, I give and bequeath to the fabric of the church of Oteley 20 shillings. Again, to the church of Leythley towards the repair of the bells 13s 4d. Again, I give and bequeath to the chapel of Stainburn 6s 8d. Again, to the chapel of Farnley 13s 4d. Again, I give and bequeath to the four orders of Friars of York, 26s 8d, namely, each order 6s 8d. Again, I bequeath to the Brothers of St Robert by Knaresborough 6s 8d. Again, I bequeath to a suitable chaplain to celebrate [Mass] for my soul continually for three years £10, namely, five marks for each year. Again, I give and bequeath to John Whithed [Whitehead], Chaplain, 6s 8d. Again, I give and bequeath to Thomas Lindley my son and heir various precious objects of mine, described below, namely two standing pieces [of plate] of one set with one cover belonging to the same, two more pieces of silver, smooth and flat, neither covered, two mazers silvergilt, two standing silver salt-cellars of one set with one lid to the same, one powderbox of silver and the six best silver spoons. Again, I bequeath to my three daughters, namely, to each 20 shillings. Again, I give and bequeath to [blank] Milner one cow. Again, I give and bequeath to Isabella Downwell [Dunwell] and Alice Duffeld [Duffield] 6s 8d, namely to each of them 3s 4d. Again, to John Ledbetter one heifer. Again, to George Gudaile [Goodall3s 4d. Again, I give and bequeath to Robert, John, Richard and Percival my sons, to each of them are 26s 8d. Again, I give and bequeath to Thomas Hawkesworth and Henry Downwell [Dunwell], to each of them 3s 4d. Again, I give and bequeath to the House of [Nun] Appleton 6s 8d. The rest of all my goods not above bequeathed I give and bequeath to Isabella my wife, Thomas Franke, William Lindley my son and William Lindeley of Leithley, to dispose of for me as it shall seem to them most expedient, and these I make and appoint my true executors. In witness whereof I have applied my seal to this my present testament, these being witnesses: Richard Kighley, junior, Walter Wood, William Arthington and many others.
The present testament was proved on the 28th day of the month of May AD 1499, and Administration was granted to Isabella, relict of the same deceased, William Lindeley, son of the aforesaid deceased, and William Lindeley of Lethley, executors named in the same testament, sworn in the legal form; power being reserved to us to ground like Administration to Thomas Franke, named as coexecutor in the said testament, when he shall come to receive it in legal form.
