HILARY WAS MARRIED TWICE POSSIBLY, THE NAME HILARY HAS NOT BEEN FOUND ON ANY OF THE ST CATHERINE'S INDEXES ONLY THE NAME HENRY. HE WAS CERTAINLY BAPTISED HILARY, BUT MAY HAVE BEEN KNOWN AS HENRY. A HENRY MARLBOROUGH ( WHO I THINK WAS HILARY ) WAS MARRIED TO A MARGARET HORNSBY BROWN ON THE7THOF DECEMBER 1846 AT NEWCASTLE ALL SAINTS. THIS IS I THINK THE MARGARET MENTIONED IN IRENE MARLBOROUGH LETTER EARLIER THIS YEAR AS BEING THE SECOND WIFE OF HILARY (HENRY).

HENRY WAS DESCRIBED AS FULL AGE AND A BATCHELOR, A BOOTLE MAKER OF BALLOOT HILLS IN NEWCASTLE, HIS FATHER WAS SAID TO BE A JOHN MARLBOROUGH A BRICKLAYER, WHICH TIES IN WITH EARLIER INFORMATION SAYING THAT HE WAS A MASON. IT DOES NOT SAY HE WAS DECEASED, SO IT IS POSSIBLE THAT HE WAS STILL ALIVE AT HE TIME OF HIS SONS MARRIAGE. A SERCH FOR HIS DEATH CERTIFICATE WOULD PROVE THIS. MARGARET HORNSBY BROWN WAS SAID TO BE A MINOR ON THE MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE AND A SPINSTER. SHE WAS ALSO FROM BALLOOT HILLS, HER FATHER WAS A JAMES BROWN A GLASS MAKER. SO HERE AGAIN WE HAVE THE SAME TRADE MARRYING INTO THE SAME TRADE. THE MARRIAGE WAS BY BANNS, AND HENRY SIGNED AND MARGARET MADE HER MARK. THE WITNESSES WERE GEORGE MARLBOROUGH AND A JAS OR JOS PEARSON BOTH SIGNED. T R GREEN WAS THE OFFICIATING MINISTER.

John Marlborough was born on the 3rd of January 1856 at Queen Street Thoraby, in the district of Stockton in the County of Durham and Yorkshire I this was on the birth certificate. His father was Hillary Marlborough and his mother was Margaret Hornsby Brown. Hillary was a Bottle maker, and he signed the certificate on the 1st of February 1856.

John & his brother James came to work in the Kilner glass works at Conisborough. In 1878 They both married, James marrying Kezia Lindley at the register office at Doncaster and I suspect John did the same , he marrying Elizabeth Wilcock.

On the 1891 Census Conisborough John was living at Station Villas Conisborough, not far from the glass works and the census records show that his wife Elizabeth was aged 50 and he was 35 ( which is correct for John ). The census shows that there children were, Fred Wilcock Marlborough, aged 24, Martin aged 20, Charles aged 22, Margaret E, aged 12, Mary Ann, aged 11, John Alfred, aged 9, George, aged 6. This I thought a little funny as John would hardly be old enough to have children of 24, 22, and 20. I suspect that either Elizabeth had been married before or that she had the 3 elder children out of wedlock.

1 Fredrick Wilcock (All took the name Marlborough) was a watchman and was born in Conisborough.

2 Martin Marlborough was a Glass Mould fitter, and was born in Conisborough.

3 Charles ( again named Marlborough ) was 22 on the 1891 census, and was a Glass Bottle Maker, and was born Conisborough.

All the children to the marriage of Elizabeth were born in Conisborough.

Notes for ELIZABETH WILCOCK:

Elizabeth Wilcock or Wilcox had been previously married and her name was Firth, she was from earls Heaton in Dewsbury.

John Alfred Marlborough was born on the 8th of September 1881 at Conisborough, and was bapt at Conisborough on the 13th of November 1881 . His father was John Marlborough and they lived at this time at the Glass House Houses, later moving to Station Villas Conisborough.

    In a school photo of 1902 at Morely Place School Conisbrough, there's a older pupil or assistant by the name of G. Marlborough, this was the son of James, further work will have to be done to determine this. Back row RH side is George Marlbrough
