On the 1851 Leeds Census, a William Lindley was said to be a child by a former wife. The former wife was a Jane Lister who William had married in 1849 at Leeds St Peter, Jane died in 1850 of Cholera of which there was an epidemic in Leeds at that time.Jane had a child in 1840, father unknown. Jane came from Swillington, which is near to Leeds, The boy was bapt as William Lister and I have a certificate to verify this.Jane Father was a Joseph Lister. Jane was born in 1816 at Swillington.
William Lister must have been taken in by William Lindley upon his marriage to Jane Lister. I have now got a little information about William Lister.William Lister appeared on the 1861 Census for Leeds. It said he was born at Swillington and was 20 census and was a Stone Delver. He was living at East Ardsley, which is near to Leeds. He was living with his Aunt Agnes., who was Agnes Sharp.. Agnes was the sister to Jane Lister and was born on 1818 at Swillington on the 29/3/1818

More About JOHN LINDLEY:

By 1871 census , John was living in Conisbrough and working at the Kilner Glass Works, but I think as a general labourer & unmarried.

1881 Census

John Lindley was living at the address below in Castleford and was a Border at the house of Thomas Appleyard, and was unmarried.

On the 1891 census he was now married to a Mary Ann Wickham, who was from Brotherton. He was again a Border and his wife staying with a James Robinson and his family at Duke Street Castleford and was a general labourer. Also a border was Ellen Wickham a Widow, possibly her mother or step mother age 64.

John was married at St Mary the Less Allerton Bywater in 1884, living as a border.

The Church of St. Mary the Less, Allerton Bywater

The foundation for the church was laid in 1863 by Mrs Bland of Kippax Park. Bishop Bickerstilt consecrated it on August 10 th 1865. A lydgate was erected to the memory of Hugh Smithson, the manager of the local colliery. Originally there were eight bells, dedicated in June 1920 to mark the signing of the Peace on June 28th 1919. There is now only one bell in the bell cote.

The stained glass windows include one to Revd James Bell, the vicar for thirty-three years. The east window was erected by Revd Edward Davison Bland of Kippax Park. The three lights remember the Kippax vicars, Charles Bickerdike (1828-1888) and John Davison Bland. The west window was to Edward Longbottom (1910). Some of the stained glass came from the closed church of St Aidan, Great Preston. The oak pulpit and the brass lectern were dedicated on March 31st 1919. The credence table was given in memory of Peter Moody (died 1939), and the sanctuary in which the table is placed was renovated with a bequest from Revd Charles Hutchinson. It was dedicated by the Bishop of Knaresborough on December 3rd 1966

Notes for ANN ELIZABETH LINDLEY:

On her birth certificate it gave the name ANN, but on her marriage certificate it gave her name as ANN ELIZABETH, so the parish register will have to be checked to confirm this. Ann Elizabeth married a William Henry Firth aged 23 and a Bachelor, he was from Earlsheaton near Dewsbury and a Blacksmith by trade. His father was a Abraham Firth a Bookkeeper by trade. Ann Elizabeth was 19 at the time of her marriage and a Spinster, from Conisborough, but born at Thornhill Lees, Dewsbury in 1854. Her father was William Lindley a Glass Founder at the Kilner Glass Works at Conisborough. the marriage was by Banns and the vicar was John George Wood. The witnesses were a Robert White and a Mary Ann Edwards, it is possible that Mary Ann Edwards was her mother and signed in her maiden name. Mary Ann Edwards could not write at the time of her marriage in 1851 as she marked on the certificate. ANN ELIZABETH was a spinster at the time of her marriage.

The witness Mary Ann Edwards . Mary Ann Lindley was on the 1881 Conisborough census being a widow as William her husband had died in June 1880. Mary Ann Lindley was not on the 1891 Conisbrough but some Denaby parish records of burials show a Mary Ann Edwards . In 1885 a Lily Lindley daughter of Mary Ann was still living at the glass house houses as Lily was attending a school at Mexborough and would be 11 years old. More work will have to be done to find Mary Ann mother of Ann Elizabeth.

Notes for WILLIAM HENRY FIRTH:

WILLIAM HENRY FIRTH WAS A BLACKSMITH AND AGED 23 AND A BACHELOR AT THE TIME OF HIS MARRIAGE TO ANN ELIZABETH LINDLEY. THE MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE SAID HE WAS OF CONISBOROUGH BUT I SUSPECT HE LIVED AT DENABY AS DENABY CAME UNDER CONISBOROUGH AT THAT TIME OR MEXBOROUGH.

Some more checking will have to be done as there was a Lindley family in Mexborough at about that time and as far i am concerned were no relation of the Conisborough family.

Notes for GLADYS LILY LINDLEY:

In August 1891 a Lily was bapt on 30/8.1891, this entry is in the Conisbrough St Peters Bapt book.

The birth certificate says she was registered as Gladys. The birth certificate gives the date of birth as that of 28/8/1891 - the same as that for Lily. It seems that the bay was bapt Lily and Registered as Gladys. As there was no mention by my father of a Lily, I can only assume that the registration is correct. I now have to determine when Gladys died. The bapt entry said PB, which I think means Private Baptism, the child may have been sickly.

Notes for JAMES LINDLEY:

JAMES LINDLEY was born at 16 NORTHCLIFFE Road Conisborough on 7th of September 1908 and was registered by Ellen Lindley his mother formally Akroyd, this road had been previously called Ernshaw Lane after the builders Ernshaw. The birth was registered as entry No 304 and was registered on the 16th of October 1908

James went to a Church school at Conisborough with Harry his brother. Harry had some problem with his eyes.

James left shool at 13 and went to work at the Queens Foundry latter known as HATTERSLEY BROS at Swinton. His brother George William Lindley was already working there. They were both apprentice Moulders.

James married Nellie Constantine at Denaby parish church on the 24th April 1937. James was 28 at he time and a bachelor and lived at 19 Daylands Avenue Conisborough. The witnesses at the marriage were George William Lindley (his brother) and Johanna Lindley (nee Costantine) Nellie's sister. The entry number was 270

James worked at the foundry until his retirement in 1972.

James and his brother George were active members of the Castle and Ivenhoe working men's clubs. As two brothers married two sisters they were close friends and all pursued an active social life together. They went on holiday together mainly to Blackpool and later on went on Sheffield United tours to the Bournemouth area and stayed at some very good hotels.

James died in October 1988 at the age of 80 and was cremated at Rosehill at Doncaster and his ashes were scattered there

Notes for NELLIE CONSTANTINE:

NELLIE LINDLEY nee CONSTANTINE was born on the 25th of April 1905 at Denaby, the register entry No on her birth certificate was 19 and she was registered on the 31st of May 1905, a small certificate was issued. Nellie died on the 4th of August 1998 at 4pm on the medical assessment ward 17 at Doncaster Royal Infirmity. Nellie was the daughter of George Constantine and Elizabeth Walton. Nellie lived at 16 Warmsworth Street. Her father was a miner at the local Denaby colliery.

Nellie attended the Rossington Street school just at the bottom of the street were she lived. In the 'Bag Muck' strike in the early years of the century her father along with many other miners and there families were thrown out of there houses by the colliery company, many 'camping' on the Denaby crags. Nellie's father found himself a job at South Kirby colliery and the family went to live at Hemsworth on Union Street and attended the local school there. When things returned to normal at Denaby the family moved back there and lived at 16 Warmsworth Street (previously living in Maltby Street.

Nellie left school at 13 and went to work in a local shop called Edwards Shop, it was a shop that sold everything including drapery etc. Nellie worked there for many years. At the outbreak of the second world war Nellie worked at the Denaby Powder works as it was know assembling explosives etc for the war effort. She spent some time at the Maltby factory as well in this period.

Shortly after the war Nellie found herself working at the Rossington Street school as a Dinner lady working in the kitchen preparing meals for the school children.

Nellie worked there until she retired at the age of 60 in 1965. She then looked after her aged mother at hr home of 19 Hameline Road Conisborough.

Nellie known as Aunty Nellie had a good social life and attended Conisborough Pictures several times a week with her sister Johanna, they were also members of two local clubs, the Castle and Ivenhoe clubs. They went on holidays to Blackpool and later on when retired went on Sheffield United Tour holidays to the Bournemouth area.

When her husband died in 1988 Nellie did lots of knitting for charities etc and visited her sister at the bottom of Hameline Road. Nellie was active and was very independent and needed very little help. For the later part of her life she was unable to get out but enjoyed the  company of friends and neighbours. Nellie will be sadly missed by all.

The funeral was held at St Peters church Conisborough by the Rev Philip Jepps and a service at Rosehill Crematorium, aunt's ashes were scattered at Rosehill to comply with her wishes.

On the morning of the 4th of August 1998, the council warder telephoned me at about 9am and said that she could not get into aunty Nellie's house. As i had a key i said i would go up. On arrival i found that i could not get in as the key had been left in the door. the warden had sent for the police, PC 381 Lee Hague and PC 1750 Andy Booth arrived (9.30) they immediately broke in. they found Aunty in the toilet and porch. They found her with a very week pulse and administered mouth to mouth resuscitation and improved her pulse. An ambulance was sent for and i went with her to the DRI. She was admitted to ward 17 of medical assessment. as she was very cold they stared to warm her up. The Doctor and ward sister came to see me and Pam and told us that it was highly unlikely that she would recover. We spent some time at her bedside and then went home. We revisited in the afternoon and Aunty died at 4.20 pm.

It is ironic that she died on my mothers wedding anniversary ie 4th august and that my mother died on the 25th of April my aunt's birthday.
